Bart Elsendoorn — Zero Waste Chef

The culinary skill of Bart Elsendoorn, the founder of Elsendoorn Catering, was sparkled when he was five while making cakes by himself. His passion for cooking turned concrete when he, as a student, established his own catering company in Utrecht. Since then with a remarkable effort, he has been doing jobs all over the Netherlands.

The menu is pretty special and rich varying from exclusive multi course professional dinners to student menus, always made with love for the ingredients and products. Needless to say, feedbacks are quite positive.

Most of the time caterers have experienced that after a special occasion, food remains. What to do with it depends on the mindset. Throw it away? Most probably. However, on this matter, Bart Elsendoorn’s catering company is exceptional because he does what most catering companies’ chefs don’t. He has been donating food to a regular partner who does a great work by teaching Dutch language classes to immigrants in Utrecht, and he already donated food in Rotterdam and Breda. Even sometimes when he needs to deliver the food, he states that “Donating normally takes just one phone call, it’s incredibly easy to schedule with the rest of the activities at the location. On the rare occasions that I had to bring it myself, it was so gratifying to see how happy it made people”.

He concludes that “In the end, every chef hopes people love his or her food. Donating food and seeing the reactions as a result is therefore highly rewarding and highly addictive”.

I hope it will inspire other catering companies to divert leftovers by doing morally and environmentally a good deed like Bart Elsendoorn does. Wasting food means waste of money, waste of natural resources that rear that food, and waste of love!

FSEN NL(Food Surplus Entrepreneurs Network Netherlands) has been creating a network of social entrepreneurs across the Netherlands, and supporting them with learning opportunities, collaboration opportunities and visibility, and building solutions to food waste. If an initiative encounters challenges, we are here to help them. Without any charges, we have a strong capability to promote them and spread their story, which will do well for their reputation, and also to make them get in touch with many other initiatives in the Netherlands.
